Latest news on Worcestershire CCC, covering the Rapids in the County Championship, T20 Blast and One-Day Cup, plus New Road matchday updates.
Worcestershire County Cricket Club represents the historic county of Worcestershire and is one of eighteen first-class counties in English and Welsh domestic cricket. Founded in 1865, the club is based at New Road in Worcester and is affectionately known to supporters as 'the Pears', while its Twenty20 side plays under the name Worcestershire Rapids in black and gold.
The club competes across the County Championship, the T20 Blast and the One-Day Cup, the three pillars of the English domestic season. Worcestershire have won the County Championship five times, most recently in 1989, and lifted the T20 Blast for the first time in 2018. Like many counties, they have experienced spells in both divisions of the Championship over the years, reflecting the competitive nature of the domestic game.
Beyond results on the field, New Road is known for its setting beside the River Severn, within sight of Worcester Cathedral, often described as one of the most picturesque grounds in English cricket. The ground has occasionally flooded due to its riverside location, a quirk that has become part of club folklore. Worcestershire's community and junior cricket programmes remain central to the club's identity, alongside a growing women's and girls' pathway.
The club's history stretches back to its formation at the Star Hotel in Worcester, with early success in the Minor Counties Championship preceding admission to the County Championship in 1899. A golden era in the 1960s to 1980s brought stars such as Tom Graveney, Basil D'Oliveira and Norman Gifford, while later generations saw Ian Botham and Graeme Hick, whose 405 not out remains a landmark innings, wear the Worcestershire colours. Moeen Ali later emerged through the club's ranks to become an England international.
From Championship battles to T20 Blast finals night ambitions, Worcestershire CCC continues to be a fixture of the English domestic cricket calendar. Follow NewsNow's Worcestershire CCC feed for the latest match reports, results and club news from New Road throughout the season.
