About our Director of National Intelligence news

Latest news on the ODNI, covering intelligence oversight, national security threats, surveillance policy and IC reform.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) sits at the head of the US Intelligence Community, coordinating the work of eighteen separate agencies and departments. It sets priorities for intelligence collection and analysis, oversees the National Intelligence Program budget, and briefs the President, Congress and senior military commanders on national security matters.

Coverage in this feed tracks the ODNI's annual threat assessment, its statistical transparency reports on surveillance authorities under FISA, and congressional testimony from intelligence leadership. Debates over the renewal and scope of national security surveillance powers, cybersecurity modernisation efforts, and the intelligence community's budget requests are recurring flashpoints, alongside scrutiny from oversight committees and civil liberties advocates.

Beyond policy, the ODNI oversees a large professional workforce spanning analysis, collection, acquisition and cybersecurity roles, with its own Inspector General and Civil Liberties, Privacy and Transparency office tasked with balancing security needs against individual rights. This tension between secrecy and accountability shapes much of the public conversation around the agency and its leadership.

The office was created following recommendations from the 9/11 Commission, which found that fragmented intelligence sharing had contributed to missed warning signs ahead of the September 2001 attacks. Established under the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act, the ODNI replaced the earlier Director of Central Intelligence role and was designed to unify a community long criticised for operating in silos.

Since its formation, the ODNI has continued to adapt its structure through periodic reorganisations of its directorates and mission centres, reflecting shifting priorities from counterterrorism toward cyber threats, emerging technology and great-power competition. Follow our NewsNow feed for ongoing coverage of the ODNI, its leadership and the wider intelligence community.
