About our London local news today

Live London news including the latest news today on crime, travel, the Tube, weather, and much more from the capital city of England and the UK.

The Greater London metropolitan area has an estimated 9,787,426 inhabitants. The city has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km2) medieval boundaries. Since at least the 19th century, "London" has also referred to the metropolis around this core, historically split between Middlesex, Essex, Surrey, Kent and Hertfordshire, which today largely makes up Greater London, a region governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly.

The boroughs of London are the 32 local authority districts that make up Greater London; each is governed by a London borough council. The City of Westminster is not a London borough but is instead governed by the Westminster City Council. The boroughs of London were all created at the same time as Greater London on 1 April 1965 by the London Government Act 1963.

The current boroughs are: Barking and Dagenham, Barnet, Bexley, Brent, Bromley, Camden, Croydon, Ealing, Enfield, Greenwich, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Haringey, Harrow, Havering, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Kingston upon Thames, Lambeth, Lewisham, Merton, Newham, Redbridge, Richmond upon Thames, Southwark, Sutton, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, Wandsworth, Westminster.
