The 76ers were founded in 1946 as the Syracuse Nationals, one of the original members of the NBA's predecessor league, the Basketball Association of America (BAA). They won their first NBA championship in 1955, led by Hall of Famer Dolph Schayes. They moved to Philadelphia in 1963 and changed their name to the 76ers. They won their second NBA championship in 1967, led by Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain. They won their third and most recent NBA championship in 1983, led by Hall of Famers Julius Erving and Moses Malone. They have also won five conference titles (in 1977, 1980, 1982, 1983, and 2001) and eight division titles (in 1950, 1952, 1955, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1977, 1978).

The 76ers have had many notable players and coaches throughout their history. Some of their Hall of Fame players include Charles Barkley, Allen Iverson, Billy Cunningham, George McGinnis, Maurice Cheeks, Bobby Jones, Hal Greer, Chet Walker, and Dikembe Mutombo. Some of their Hall of Fame coaches include Alex Hannum, Jack Ramsay, Billy Cunningham, Larry Brown, and Chuck Daly.

The 76ers have retired nine numbers: 2 (Moses Malone), 3 (Allen Iverson), 4 (Dolph Schayes), 6 (Julius Erving), 10 (Maurice Cheeks), 13 (Wilt Chamberlain), 15 (Hal Greer), 24 (Bobby Jones), and 34 (Charles Barkley).
