Latest news on Fleetwood Town, covering League Two news, fixtures, results, transfers, Highbury Stadium and Cod Army updates.
Fleetwood Town is a professional football club based in the seaside resort and fishing port of Fleetwood, on the Fylde coast of Lancashire. Nicknamed the Cod Army, and traditionally also known as the Fishermen, the club takes its identity from the town's trawler heritage. The side play home matches at Highbury Stadium and compete in League Two, English football's fourth tier, after a rapid rise from non-league obscurity in the 2000s. Alongside the league campaign, Town regularly feature in the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and the EFL Trophy.
Town's recent history has been shaped as much by boardroom upheaval as by results on the pitch. Long-time chairman Andy Pilley, who bankrolled the club's climb through the divisions, was jailed for fraud in 2023 over his energy supply businesses. Ownership then passed to his son, Jamie Pilley, prompting scrutiny from supporters and the EFL over the club's finances and governance. On the pitch, Town dropped out of League One in 2024 and have since been rebuilding under head coach Matt Lawlor, promoted from within the club's own coaching staff in 2026.
Beyond results, Fleetwood Town is woven into daily life across its small Lancashire town and the wider Wyre borough. The Fleetwood Town Community Trust runs social and educational programmes throughout the area, while the academy at Poolfoot Farm has produced a steady stream of first-team debutants and notable FA Youth Cup runs. Matches against neighbouring Blackpool, known as the Fylde Coast derby, remain the fixture supporters mark first on the calendar. Ties with Manchester United and sister club Waterford FC in Ireland have also become a notable part of the club's recruitment and loan strategy.
The current club traces its roots to 1997, when it was reformed as Fleetwood Wanderers before adopting the Fleetwood Town name in 2002, building on an original club dating back to 1908. Investment from Pilley fuelled five promotions in eight seasons, culminating in the Conference National title and a first taste of Football League status in 2012. Two years later, Town beat Burton Albion in the League Two play-off final at Wembley to reach League One, the highest level in the club's history. That spell in the third tier lasted a decade before relegation returned the club to League Two in 2024.
