Originally formed in 1883 as Heaton Norris Rovers, the club was renamed Stockport County in 1890 and have played at Edgeley Park since 1902. County first joined the Football League in 1900 and, aside from a brief spell in non-league football between 2011 and 2022, have spent the majority of their history in the EFL. Their most successful period came in the 1990s, when they competed in the second tier of English football for five seasons and reached the League Cup semi-finals in 1996–97.
The club's traditional colours are blue and white, a combination they have worn since 1914, and their nickname the Hatters is a nod to the town's former hat-making industry. Stockport currently play in League One, the third tier of English football.
