About our Reading FC news
Latest news on Reading FC, the Royals, covering League One football, match results, transfers, club news, and updates from the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
Founded on Christmas Day in 1871, Reading Football Club is one of England's oldest professional teams. Based in Berkshire, the club competes in EFL League One and plays at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. Nicknamed the Royals after the Royal County of Berkshire, they were previously known as the Biscuitmen due to the town's association with Huntley & Palmers.
The club underwent significant change in May 2025 when Redwood Holdings Limited, led by American businessman Rob Couhig, completed a takeover following years of financial turbulence. Previous ownership had resulted in multiple points deductions and transfer embargoes, culminating in relegation from the Championship. Under new leadership, Reading aims to rebuild stability and progress back up the English football pyramid with transparent management and sustainable finances.
Reading's greatest achievements include reaching the Premier League for the first time in 2006-07 after winning the Championship with a record 106 points, scoring 99 goals and losing just twice. The club also holds the record for most consecutive wins at the start of a season with 13 victories in 1985-86. Beyond the pitch, Reading FC Women operates at the grassroots level, while the club maintains a strong community presence through local initiatives and youth development.
The club moved from Elm Park, their home for 102 years, to the modern 24,200-capacity stadium in 1998. Originally named the Madejski Stadium after former chairman Sir John Madejski, the venue was rebranded in 2021 following a sponsorship agreement. Reading's academy has produced notable talent, including Gylfi Sigurðsson, who became the first academy graduate to play and score at a FIFA World Cup for Iceland in 2018.
