About our NATO news

Latest news on NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), an intergovernmental military alliance between 30 North American and European countries. The organisation implements the North Atlantic Treaty that was signed on 4 April 1949. NATO constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by any external party. NATO's headquarters are located in Haren, Brussels, Belgium, while the headquarters of its military arm, the Allied Command Operations, is in Mons, Belgium.

Since its founding, the admission of new member states has increased the alliance from the original 12 countries to 30. The most recent member state to be added to NATO was North Macedonia in March 2020. Following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Sweden and Finland announced their intention to apply for NATO membership.

NATO has been involved in a number of major military operations and peacekeeping efforts, including the Korean War, the Cold War, the Kosovo War, and the War in Afghanistan. The organisation has also been active in combating terrorism, most notably through Operation Active Endeavour, a naval operation in the Mediterranean Sea that is designed to detect, monitor and intercept terrorist activity.
