Latest news on Northern Ireland, covering Stormont politics, Belfast, Derry, the Good Friday Agreement and the Windsor Framework.

Northern Ireland is one of the four nations of the United Kingdom, sharing a land border with the Republic of Ireland. Its six counties, Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Londonderry, are home to Belfast, the capital, and Derry, its second city. Government is devolved to the Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont, where power is shared between unionist, nationalist and cross-community parties.

The region's political life continues to be shaped by the Windsor Framework, which governs trade arrangements between Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the European Union following Brexit. Westminster and the Stormont Executive regularly negotiate budget settlements, with the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland pressing for balanced spending. Legislation addressing the legacy of the Troubles, including provisions for victims, veterans and families still seeking answers, remains a recurring and sensitive issue.

Power-sharing rests on the First Minister and deputy First Minister holding office jointly, with neither able to function without the other. The Democratic Unionist Party, Ulster Unionist Party, Traditional Unionist Voice and Progressive Unionist Party represent unionist traditions, while Sinn Féin and the SDLP represent nationalist ones. The Alliance Party has grown as a voice for those who identify with neither community exclusively.

Community life in Northern Ireland reflects both its divisions and its shared culture. The Twelfth of July and Orange Order parades remain a prominent part of the summer calendar, overseen by the Parades Commission to help manage sensitivities around routes and timing. Place names carry their own significance, with Derry and Londonderry both used depending on community identity, and cross-border cooperation with the Republic of Ireland continuing to develop.

The region's modern politics cannot be separated from its history. Three decades of violence known as the Troubles were brought to a close by the Good Friday Agreement, also called the Belfast Agreement, signed in 1998, with the St Andrews Agreement later restoring devolved government after a suspension. That peace process remains a reference point for how Northern Ireland balances identity, security and reconciliation today.
