About our ULEZ news

Latest news on the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), which was introduced in London in April 2019 to charge a fee for driving the most polluting vehicles in Central London. It caused a 20% reduction in emissions and a decrease in the number of worst-polluting vehicles. However, some studies show that it only had small improvements in air quality.

In August 2023, the zone was extended to cover all of Greater London, estimated to remove 20,000 to 40,000 vehicles from the road. Critics argue that the expansion unfairly affects poorer Londoners who are more likely to own non-compliant vehicles subject to daily charges. Despite opposition from residents and workers, the expansion went ahead to address the disproportionate impact of air pollution on the poorest communities.
