    About our Diane Abbott news

Latest news on Diane Abbott, a British politician who has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Hackney North and Stoke Newington since 1987. She served in the Shadow Cabinet of Jeremy Corbyn as Shadow Home Secretary from 2016 to 2020. She was the first black woman elected to Parliament, and is the longest-serving black MP in the House of Commons. Diane Abbott currently sits as an independent MP, having been suspended from the Labour whip on 23 April 2023.

Abbott was suspended after writing a letter to the Observer about racism, in which she suggested that Jewish people and other white groups do not face racism but only prejudice similar to "redheads". She later apologised for her remarks and said they were errors in an initial draft that was sent. She said she wished to apologise for any anguish caused and acknowledged that racism takes many forms.
