Irish rugby union began in 1874 when the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) was founded, laying the foundation for organised rugby in Ireland. The men's national team has since won the Six Nations Championship, previously known as the Five Nations Championship and Home Nations Championship, 15 times outright and are the current defending champions, winning the tournament in 2023. They have also regularly competed in the Rugby World Cup since its inception.
Officially formed in 1993, the Ireland women's national rugby union team has regularly competed in both the Women's Six Nations Championship and the Women's Rugby World Cup, notably winning the former of the two competitions twice in 2013 and 2015.
