New Zealand is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country consists of two main landmasses—the North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui) and the South Island (Te Waipounamu)—and around 700 smaller islands. New Zealand is renowned for its diverse landscapes, ranging from the fiord-like sounds of the southern-west to the sandy beaches of the subtropical Far North. The South Island is largely dominated by the Southern Alps while a volcanic plateau covers much of the North Island. New Zealand's capital is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.
