About our Maria Corina Machado news

Latest news on María Corina Machado Parisca, a Venezuelan politician. Born on October 7, 1967, in Caracas, Venezuela, she is the daughter of a prominent steel businessman and a psychologist. Her education includes a degree in industrial engineering and a master's in finance. Machado began her political involvement by founding the Atenea Foundation in 1992 and later co-founded the Venezuelan volunteer civil organization Súmate in 2001.

Machado's political career includes serving as an elected member of the National Assembly of Venezuela from 2011 to 2014. She was a key figure in the 2014 Venezuelan protests against President Nicolás Maduro and announced intentions for a presidential run in 2019 amid the Venezuelan presidential crisis. Machado was a precandidate for Vente Venezuela in the primary elections of the Unitary Platform of 2023, but she was controversially disqualified for fifteen years by the Maduro Comptroller General. However, after winning the primary elections, she was proclaimed as the opposition candidate for the 2024 presidential elections.

Machado also gained notoriety for her role in the 2004 Venezuelan recall referendum of President Hugo Chávez, where she faced charges of conspiracy and treason. Despite facing legal challenges and criticism from the Chávez government, she continued to be an active figure in Venezuelan politics. Her 2012 presidential election campaign saw her challenging Chávez on issues like shortages of basic goods and crime, though she lost the opposition primary to Henrique Capriles.
