    About out UK/Afghanistan news

Latest news on matters concerning Afghanistan and the United Kingdom, which occur against the backdrop of a history of military invasion.

The international relations between the United Kingdom and Afghanistan has been marked by a history of military conflict stretching back into the 19th century. In 2001, as part of the so-called 'War on Terror', the United Kingdom and its allies invaded Afghanistan in Operation Enduring Freedom to topple the Taliban Government and deny al-Qaeda a safe base of operations in Afghanistan following the 9/11 terror attacks. British forces would remain in Afghanistan as part of an international coalition to support the fledgling Islamic Republic of Afghanistan against Taliban insurgents until they withdrew in 2021.
