About our UK/Iraq news
Latest headlines and updates on UK/Iraq international relations news, including statements, commentary and analysis on British-Iraqi affairs.
British-Iraqi relations have occurred against a backdrop of military conflict and invasion, first with the Gulf War (1990-1991) and then with the Invasion of Iraq (2003) to “disarm” the Saddam Hussein regime of WMD’s, although none were found by an independent UN inspection team.
British forces remained in Iraq as part of anti-insurgency operations and to support the Republic of Iraq until 2011, when most British forces were withdrawn. British involvement in Iraq would return as part of a multinational coalition in response to the threat posed by ISIL in 2014, principally focusing on air and drone strikes. British forces finally withdrew from Iraq in 2021.
