About our Birmingham City Council news
Latest news on Birmingham City Council, the local government body responsible for the governance of the City of Birmingham in England. It is the most populated local council area in the United Kingdom (excluding counties) with 101 elected councillors representing over one million people, in 69 wards.
In September 2023, the council declared itself in financial distress and issued a Section 114 notice, which meant that it will stop all but essential spending. This was due to the huge equal pay claims that the council had to pay out, which amounted to more than £1 billion. The council is now facing a serious financial crisis and is seeking help from the government and other sources.
