Founded in 1972 as the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association (WHA), the franchise was moved to Connecticut and became the Hartford Whalers of the National Hockey League until their eventual move and rebrand to North Carolina in 1997.
The Hurricanes won their first and only Stanley Cup in the 2005/06 season, defeating the Edmonton Oilers over seven games. They also have a minor league affiliation with the Norfolk Admirals of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).
