The UEFA Nations League was introduced in 2018 as a new competition for European national football teams with the aim of replacing international friendlies with more competitive matches. The league features a tiered system with teams divided into leagues based on their UEFA rankings.

Portugal won the inaugural edition of the competition in Porto after beating the Netherlands. The current holders of the Nations League are Spain, who beat Croatia on penalties in Rotterdam for the 2022/23 title.
