With the nation of Georgia having been part of the Soviet Union the country did not have a national football team until 1990. The first ever professional men's match the side played was a 2-2 friendly draw against Lithuania. In 1992 Georgia became a member of both UEFA and FIFA, allowing them to compete in international competitions.
It wasn't until 2024 that the team made history and qualified for their first ever major tournament. They achieved this feat after a penalty shootout win against Greece in the Euro 2024 qualification final.
