    About our Indian Ocean news

Latest news on the Indian Ocean, the third-largest and the youngest of the world's five oceanic divisions, covering about 20% of the Earth's water surface and bounded by Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Southern Ocean or Antarctica. It is named after India, which has the largest coastline among the countries that border it.

The Indian Ocean has a surface area of about 70,560,000 square kilometers (27,240,000 square miles) and a mean depth of about 3,741 meters (12,274 feet). The deepest point in the Indian Ocean is the Sunda Deep in the Java Trench, which reaches a depth of 7,450 meters (24,442 feet).

The Indian Ocean is divided into two major parts by the equator: the North Indian Ocean and the South Indian Ocean. It can also be divided into four quadrants by the Chagos-Laccadive Ridge: the Northeast Indian Ocean, the Northwest Indian Ocean, the Southeast Indian Ocean, and the Southwest Indian Ocean. The Indian Ocean has many marginal seas, such as the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Andaman Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and the Great Australian Bight. The Indian Ocean is also part of the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), a phenomenon that affects the climate and rainfall patterns of the region.

The Indian Ocean was named by Greek geographer Eratosthenes in the 3rd century BCE, who called it Indikos Okeanos, meaning 'Indian Sea'. The Indian Ocean was first explored by ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China. It later became an important route for trade and cultural exchange between Asia, Africa, and Europe.
