Latvia, officially known as the Republic of Latvia, is a country in the Baltic region of Europe. It is one of the Baltic states, sharing borders with Estonia, Lithuania, Russia and Belarus. Latvia's capital and largest city is Riga.
The landscape is an undulating plain, with fairly flat lowlands alternating with hills. Whilst Latvia is a small country with a land size of 64,559 square kilometres (24,926 square miles), its strategic location has instigated many wars between rival powers on its territory, including the occupation by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in 1941 and 1944 respectively.
Latvia would restore its independence at the end of the Singing Revolution in 1991. Since then, Latvia has been a democratic unitary parliamentary republic.
