About our Deposit Return Scheme news

Latest news on the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in the UK, a system that aims to increase recycling rates for certain beverage containers, such as plastic bottles and aluminium cans.

The UK government has announced plans to introduce a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in 2025 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, which aims to encourage recycling of single-use drinks containers and reduce plastic pollution. The scheme will involve placing small cash deposits on drinks containers, such as plastic bottles and aluminium cans, which can be redeemed by returning them to designated sites or reverse vending machines. Retailers who sell drinks covered by the scheme will host the return points. The DRS aims to ensure 85% fewer drinks containers are discarded as litter after three years of its launch and collect over 85% of returnable drinks containers once the scheme is up and running.
