The Texas Longhorns represent the University of Texas at Austin and play home games at Moody Center, which opened in 2022 and holds around 10,000 fans. The programme has played since 1905-06 and moved from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference in 2024. Burnt orange, the Bevo mascot and the "Hook 'em Horns" sign are central to Longhorns basketball.

Under Sean Miller, appointed in 2025, Texas competes in one of the toughest conferences in the sport, where every game, ranking and NCAA Tournament seed matters. The Longhorns reached the Elite Eight in 2023 under Rodney Terry, who took over mid-season. Texas fans also follow the renewed rivalry with Texas A&M inside the SEC.

Modern college hoops brings challenges. NIL deals, revenue sharing after the House settlement, the transfer portal and the chase for top recruits now shape every roster, so off-season movement is as closely watched as game results. Coaching turnover has also tested the programme, with Rick Barnes, Shaka Smart and Chris Beard each leaving after different spells in Austin.

Basketball is part of Austin life, from student crowds to alumni who star in the NBA. Kevin Durant, T.J. Ford, LaMarcus Aldridge, D.J. Augustin, Myles Turner and Jarrett Allen all passed through the Forty Acres, while the Lady Longhorns add to the city's hoops culture. Hook 'em Horns is a rallying cry on campus well beyond the court.

Texas reached the Final Four in 1943, 1947 and 2003, the last under Rick Barnes with national player of the year T.J. Ford. Kevin Durant won the same award in 2007 during a single dazzling season in Austin. The Longhorns also won the Southwest Conference many times and moved to the Big 12 in 1996 before joining the SEC.
