The RFU Championship is the professional second tier of rugby union in England, featuring 14 teams. The standard Championship season will normally run from late September until May with all the sides playing each other both home and away. At the end of the regular season the top six sides will enter a play-off phase where the eventual champions will play the bottom placed Premiership side for a spot in next season's top tier.

Established in 2009 following a restructuring of the national league system, the RFU Championship has undergone various changes in format and promotion criteria over the years. Despite facing challenges, the league remains an essential stepping stone for aspiring Premiership clubs and a proving ground for up-and-coming players and coaches.
