The Brasileirão is Brazil's top professional football league and one of the most competitive in South America. The big clubs include Flamengo, Fluminense, Botafogo and Vasco da Gama in Rio de Janeiro, and Palmeiras, Corinthians, São Paulo and Santos in São Paulo. Cruzeiro and Atlético Mineiro lead the way in Minas Gerais, with Grêmio and Internacional in Rio Grande do Sul and Bahia in Salvador. Stories often centre on star signings, managerial changes, stadium and fan issues, disciplinary rulings and the exodus of young talent to Europe.

Brazilian football is a national passion, from packed derbies such as the Fla-Flu and the Grenal to the samba-fuelled atmosphere of the stands. The country has produced Pelé, Zico, Ronaldo and Neymar, with many first showing their talent at home clubs. Fans follow the league across social media and radio all year round.

The domestic calendar also includes the Campeonato Paulista, Campeonato Carioca, Campeonato Gaúcho, Campeonato Mineiro, Campeonato Paranaense, Campeonato Pernambucano and Campeonato Baiano. Clubs also contest the Copa do Brasil knockout cup and qualify for the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. Brazilian sides regularly fight for continental honours alongside Argentine rivals.
