Latest news on Chris Woakes, England cricket all-rounder, providing coverage of Test, ODI, T20I performances, IPL career, and Warwickshire appearances.
Christopher Roger Woakes, born 2 March 1989 in Birmingham, has established himself as one of England's premier all-rounders across all formats of cricket. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches, the right-arm fast-medium bowler and capable lower-order batsman has represented England in 57 Test matches, 122 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 33 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) since his debut in 2011, claiming over 380 international wickets and scoring more than 3,500 runs.
Woakes reached significant milestones in his career, most notably being part of England's triumphant 2019 Cricket World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup winning squads, placing him in an elite group of only six players to have won both tournaments. His exceptional performances in the 2023 Ashes series earned him the title of England's "Player of the Series" with 19 wickets in just six innings. Most recently, Woakes featured in England's Test match against New Zealand in December 2024, continuing to demonstrate his value to the national team despite entering the later stages of his career.
Known affectionately as "The Wizard" by teammates and fans alike, Woakes enjoys tremendous popularity within cricket circles for his humble demeanour and consistent performances. His connection to his roots remains strong, having represented his home county Warwickshire since 2006 and maintaining his support for local football club Aston Villa. In franchise cricket, Woakes has showcased his talents globally, playing for teams including Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, and most recently Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League.
Woakes' journey to cricket stardom began in modest circumstances, playing for Four Oaks Saints Cricket Club at age seven. His early sporting talent was evident as he was also a trainee footballer with Walsall F.C. until age 14. His consistent performances for Warwickshire earned him recognition, and by 2009, he had scored his maiden first-class century against Hampshire and been called up to the England Lions squad. Woakes has since achieved the rare distinction of appearing on both Lord's honours boards, one of only ten players to do so by scoring a century (137 not out against India in 2018) and taking ten wickets in a match (11/102 against Pakistan in 2016).
