Latest news on Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), the largest contract chip maker in mainland China, headquartered in Shanghai and incorporated in the Cayman Islands. It provides integrated circuit (IC) manufacturing services using process technologies from 350 nm to 7 nm. SMIC is partially state-owned, with major shareholders including Datang Telecom Group and the China National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund. Notable customers include Qualcomm, Broadcom, and Texas Instruments.
In September 2020, the United States Department of Commerce declared SMIC a military end-user and required American technology companies to obtain a licence to deal with it. In October 2020, some of SMIC's suppliers were informed that they must apply for an export licence before supplying SMIC with certain American equipment and products. In December 2020, the United States Department of Defense named SMIC as a company "owned or controlled" by the People's Liberation Army and prohibited American companies or individuals from investing in it. SMIC was also added to the Bureau of Industry and Security's Entities List.
