About our Maxi Jazz news
Latest news on Maxi Jazz (Maxwell Fraser), the lead singer and frontman of the British trip-hop group Faithless.
He was a core member of the group, which gained popularity in the 1990s with hit singles such as "Insomnia" and "We Come 1." Jazz was born in Brixton, England and began his musical career with the group Cara in the 1980s and 1990s. In addition to his work with Faithless, he also fronted a band called Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys and released music with the group Soul Food Cafe.
Faithless formed in 1995 and became pioneers of stadium dance music, performing at major festivals such as Glastonbury and being nominated for Best UK Dance Act at the Brit Awards in 1999 and 2002. The band split in 2011, but returned to release a new studio album almost a decade later. However, Jazz did not participate in the reunion and instead focused on his work with Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys. The guitar band marked a new sound for Jazz, who began writing the material in 2013, during Faithless's hiatus. The band described their sound as incorporating "melodic funk and blues mixed with reggae beats, dub baselines [and] Jamaican melodies."
Maxi Jazz, whose real name was Maxwell Fraser, was a British musician and member of the Soka Gakkai International Buddhist organisation. He was a supporter of the Burma Campaign UK and an associate director of the Crystal Palace F.C. football club. In 2011, a portrait of him was painted by British artist Joe Simpson and exhibited in various locations in the UK, including the Royal Albert Hall and the National Portrait Gallery. Jazz died at the age of 65 in London in December 2022.
