Altman was born in 1985 in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. He received his first computer at the age of eight and learned how to program. He enrolled in Stanford University to study computer science, but dropped out after one year to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions.

In 2005, Sam Altman co-founded Loopt, a location-based social networking app that was acquired by Green Dot Corporation for $43.4 million in 2012. He also co-founded Hydrazine Capital, a venture capital firm that invests in early-stage startups. In 2011, he became a partner at Y Combinator, a prestigious startup accelerator that has funded companies such as Airbnb, Dropbox, Stripe, and Reddit. He became the president of Y Combinator in 2014 and expanded its scope to include more "hard technology" companies and non-profit research initiatives. He stepped down as president in 2019 and left Y Combinator entirely in 2020.

In 2015, he co-founded OpenAI with Elon Musk and other prominent tech figures. OpenAI is a non-profit research lab that aims to create artificial intelligence that can surpass human intelligence and align with human values. OpenAI is known for developing groundbreaking AI systems such as GPT-3, DALL-E, and Codex. Altman became the CEO of OpenAI in 2020 and oversees its vision and strategy. He is also an advocate for universal basic income and has donated $10 million to fund research on the topic.
