Soap operas — or soaps — are among the most enduring forms of television drama, blending long-running storylines, ensemble casts, and real-world social issues into a format that has captivated audiences for generations. In the UK, flagship shows such as EastEnders on BBC One, Coronation Street and Emmerdale on ITV, and Hollyoaks on Channel 4 dominate the schedules, while the US daytime landscape is anchored by General Hospital, The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, and Days of Our Lives. The arrival of Beyond the Gates on CBS in February 2025 — the first new American network daytime soap since Passions launched in 1999 — marked a significant moment for the genre, bringing with it the first predominantly Black main cast in daytime drama since Generations ended in 1991.
The genre remains in constant flux, with comings and goings, cast shake-ups, and major storylines keeping fans engaged week to week. In the UK, Coronation Street moved to five episodes per week in a new scheduling format from January 2026, while a landmark crossover event between Corrie and Emmerdale — known as Corriedale — aired in the same month. On the US side, Beyond the Gates has proven a ratings success, earning critical acclaim and securing a renewal through the 2027–28 season, a sign that appetite for daytime drama remains strong.
Soaps have long served as a cultural barometer, tackling difficult subjects — from domestic violence and addiction to LGBTQ+ relationships and mental health — often well ahead of primetime drama. The genre's serial format, with its continuous open narrative and relentless cliffhangers, creates a uniquely intimate bond between characters and viewers, many of whom follow their favourite shows for decades. Iconic characters such as EastEnders' Phil Mitchell, Coronation Street's Ken Barlow, and General Hospital's Sonny Corinthos have become fixtures of popular culture in their respective countries.
The roots of soap opera stretch back to American radio in the 1930s, where serialised dramas sponsored by consumer goods companies — most famously Procter & Gamble — gave the genre its name. Television absorbed and transformed the format from the 1950s onwards. Coronation Street, which first aired on ITV on 9 December 1960, holds the Guinness World Record as the longest-running television soap opera, while BBC Radio 4's The Archers, launched in 1950, remains the longest-running soap of any kind. In the US, General Hospital has aired on ABC since 1963, making it the longest-running American daytime drama. These legacies speak to the remarkable staying power of a genre that critics have repeatedly underestimated.
Despite significant audience declines since their peak in the 1980s and 1990s — driven by the rise of reality television, shifting viewing habits, and the streaming revolution — soaps continue to adapt. In the UK, Hollyoaks now airs as a streaming-first title on Channel 4, reflecting broader changes in how audiences consume daily drama. In the US, Days of Our Lives moved to streaming platform Peacock, a milestone shift away from traditional broadcast schedules. The Daytime Emmy Awards continue to celebrate the genre's talent and craft, keeping the spotlight on a form of storytelling that, at its best, achieves genuine emotional depth.
