About our Unite the union news
Latest news on Unite the union, also known simply as Unite, the largest trade union in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It was formed in 2007 through the merger of the Transport and General Workers' Union and Amicus. The union represents workers in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, construction, manufacturing, and the public sector. Unite has a membership of over 1.4 million people and is affiliated with the Labour Party. The union is led by a General Secretary and an Executive Council, and is divided into several regions, each with its own leadership. Unite's main activities include negotiating with employers on behalf of its members, providing legal and financial assistance to members, and lobbying for policies that benefit working people.
In January 2023, Unite's General Secretary, Sharon Graham, reacted to new legislation proposed by the UK Government that would establish 'minimum safety levels' during industrial action, criticising the legislation as a 'dangerous gimmick' that would only inflate and prolong disputes. She accused Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary of the United Kingdom, of being misleading and 'economical with the truth' in his presentation of the bill.
