Latest news on the Bank of England, including Bank Rate decisions, MPC votes, inflation figures, and UK monetary policy.

The Bank of England is the United Kingdom's central bank, responsible for setting monetary policy and maintaining financial stability. Its Monetary Policy Committee meets eight times a year to decide Bank Rate, the benchmark that shapes borrowing costs across mortgages, savings and business lending. Readers searching for the Bank of England interest rate today, the base rate forecast, or the next MPC meeting date will find this feed keeps pace with every decision.

Recent decisions have been shaped by volatile energy prices linked to conflict in the Middle East, which pushed up inflation risks even as underlying domestic price pressures had been easing. The MPC has sometimes split on the right response, with some members favouring a hold and others pushing for a rate rise or cut depending on the inflation outlook. This feed tracks vote splits, rate announcements, and the Bank's shifting guidance on where Bank Rate is heading next, including live coverage as new interest rate decisions are published.

Beyond Bank Rate, the Bank of England oversees financial stability through its Financial Policy Committee, publishes the Monetary Policy Report and Financial Stability Report, and speaks regularly through the Governor and MPC members on the health of the UK economy. Controversies periodically surface over the independence of the Bank, the accuracy of its inflation forecasts, and the pace of quantitative tightening as it unwinds its bond-buying programme. This feed follows the debate on all sides, including criticism from politicians, economists, and the financial press.

The Bank of England's decisions ripple beyond the City of London, shaping household finances through mortgage rates, savings rates, and the cost of living. Its actions during periods of economic shock, from the 2008 financial crisis to the pandemic and subsequent inflation surge, have made it a central and often contested institution in national economic life. Understanding its choices helps explain movements in the pound, gilt yields, and consumer confidence.

Founded in 1694 and headquartered on Threadneedle Street, the Bank of England is one of the world's oldest central banks and has evolved from a government lender into an independent monetary authority since 1997. Its long history, from managing the gold standard to steering the UK through modern financial crises, gives context to today's policy debates. Stay with our Bank of England feed for the latest interest rate news, MPC analysis, and monetary policy developments as they happen.
