Independent news discovery needs your support
You may have noticed some changes to the NewsNow site recently in the form of more clicks, more pop-ups and more prominent adverts. I understand this will be frustrating to some users who, like me, just want to get straight to the news that matters. So I wanted to take the time to explain these changes and hope you will understand why we’ve needed to make them.
It has always been our mission to champion a healthy news diet, promoting access to credible, independent and public interest journalism from a plurality of sources. That has always meant a lot of hard work and uncertainty - digital media is a volatile business - but it has been particularly punishing recently. We are by no means alone in the news industry in feeling the pinch of steeply declining advertising rates, twinned with unpredictable referrals from the big tech platforms that increasingly dominate. Put plainly, it's getting harder to keep the lights on.
As such, we're asking loyal readers, like yourself, many of whom have been using the site for years - even decades - to support us in running the service by taking out a NewsNow Essentials subscription (which we're currently offering at less than the price of a pint a month).
There’s a lot more to running the NewsNow service than many readers realise - from the work of our editorial team in researching and vetting independent and niche sources, curating the best reading experiences and balancing perspectives across thousands of topics, to our product and development teams, working to roll out new user features as they maintain a site collating hundreds of thousands of stories every day, all year round. It all costs money, so if you value our service and you’re able to support our work with a NewsNow Essentials subscription, the whole team would be extremely grateful.
Signing up to NewsNow Essentials won't only return your experience to the NewsNow you used to love - without 'click to continue' buttons, or pop-ups asking you to upgrade - it will give you a better service, without the annoyance or clutter of ads and with faster, slicker loading. It will also help support the sustainable provision of our service, ensuring NewsNow can continue to serve up a balanced news diet to its readers for years to come.
If that's not an option for you right now, we completely understand. In that case, signing up for a free account - and staying signed in - is the next-best way to access an improved quality of service with fewer popups (with Apple sign-in, you don't even need to share your email address).
Either way, I want to thank you for using NewsNow. We've always tried to put the experience of our audience above all else. And we've been rewarded for doing so. You, along with millions of other readers, have helped keep NewsNow going since I launched it more than 25 years ago. I hope you will stay with us - and enjoy your experience - for the next 25.
Yours faithfully
