About our Great Salt Lake News

Latest news on the Great Salt Lake, the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere, located in northern Utah, United States. It is a terminal lake, meaning that water flows into it but does not flow out, which results in high salt concentrations. The lake is threatened by overconsumption and a megadrought, with historic low water levels, exposing an 800 square mile lakebed filled with soil holding toxins such as mercury, arsenic, and selenium. Scientists warn that this mud turning to dust could cause pollution and threaten the health of over 2.5 million people.

Great Salt Lake is a unique ecosystem that supports 10 million migratory birds, and only brine flies and shrimp can survive in the salty water. The ecosystem and food chain are at risk of collapsing if the lake continues to dry up.
