About our George Santos news

Latest news on George Santos, a Republican politician who was elected to Congress in Long Island, New York, in the 2022 midterm elections. Santos ran on the platform of being the "full embodiment of the American dream" and has presented himself as the son of Brazilian immigrants, the first openly gay Republican to win a House seat as a non-incumbent, and a successful Wall Street financier and investor with a real estate portfolio and animal rescue charity.

However, a review by The New York Times has called into question key parts of Santos' résumé, including his employment history at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup and his graduation from Baruch College. The Times also found little evidence of his animal rescue group being a tax-exempt organisation and no records of his properties or clients for his company, the Devolder Organization. Santos has also faced criminal charges for check fraud in Brazil.

Six Republican members of Congress from New York, including four freshmen who were elected in 2022, and the chair of the Nassau County Republican Party have called for the resignation of George Santos, who is under ethics investigation for alleged misrepresentations during his 2022 election campaign. Santos has refused to resign and has the support of Republican House leadership. He was assigned to the committees on small business and science, space, and technology, but announced on 31 January 2023, that he was temporarily vacating his committee memberships. On 9 February, 2023, a group of House Democrats filed a resolution to expel Santos from Congress, which would require two-thirds of members to pass.

On 17 November, 2023, the Chairman of the House Ethics Committee, Mississippi Rep. Michael Guest, introduced a resolution to expel New York Rep. George Santos one day after a House Ethics report detailed "substantial evidence" that Santos had committed fraud.
