About our Iranian Presidential Election news...

Latest news on Iran's Presidential elections expected to be held on June 28th 2024 following the unexpected death of Ebrahim Raisi on May 19 2024.

Ebrahim Raisi, close to the pinnacle of power in the Islamic Republic, was widely expected to rise to its top. His death in a helicopter crash on Sunday disrupted speculation about his potential succession of 85-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose health has been under scrutiny. Although Raisi's tragic fate is not expected to alter Iranian policy significantly, it will challenge a system dominated by conservative hardliners in all branches of power, both elected and unelected. His death tests the resilience and direction of Iran’s current political landscape.

Iran announced on Monday that it will hold an early presidential election on June 28. State-run news agency IRNA reported that the decision for the 14th presidential elections followed a meeting of the judicial, executive, and legislative heads. Candidate registrations will start on May 30, with campaigning from June 12-27.

Iran's elections determine its head of state and government (the president), the legislature (Majlis), and the Assembly of Experts, which elects the Supreme Leader. City and Village Council elections occur every four years nationwide. The president serves a four-year term, elected by the citizens. The Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis) has 290 members, elected for four-year terms in multi- and single-seat constituencies. The Assembly of Experts elections take place every eight years. All candidates must be approved by the Guardian Council.

The voting age in Iran was raised to 18 in January 2007, previously being 15, the lowest globally at the time.

The most recent presidential election was on June 18, 2021, and the latest legislative election on February 21, 2020. Presidential and local elections were last held simultaneously on May 19, 2017. Prior parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections took place on February 26, 2016. For more details, refer to the Politics of Iran.
