About our Corina Yoris news
Latest news on Corina Yoris-Villasana, the Venezuelan philosopher, professor and politician who is now the opposition candidate in the 2024 presidential election, replacing María Corina Machado.
Corina Yoris, an 80-year-old historian and professor, has been named by opposition leader María Corina Machado as her replacement in the upcoming Venezuelan presidential election on 28 July 2024. Machado, who won the opposition primary in October 2022 with 93% of the vote, was barred from running due to a 15-year ban on holding public office. The decision to choose Yoris comes amidst mounting pressure on the opposition to select a candidate before the 25 March deadline set by the National Electoral Council.
Yoris' appointment follows the recent arrest of two close allies of Machado, Henry Alviarez and Dignora Hernandez, as well as the issuing of warrants for seven others, including Machado's rumoured replacement, Magalli Meda. These actions by the Venezuelan government have drawn international condemnation, with the US State Department calling it a "disturbing escalation of repression" against opposition parties.
Born in Caracas in 1944, Yoris holds degrees in Letters and Philosophy from the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (UCAB) and a PhD in history. She has held several academic positions, including director of the School of Philosophy at UCAB and columnist for El Nacional newspaper. Yoris is also a member of various national and international philosophical organizations and was recently appointed as a full member of the Venezuelan Academy of Language.
As a candidate, Yoris has pledged to release Venezuela's political prisoners, estimated to number at least 250, as her first act if elected president. She is opposed to socialism and communism, believing in the free market's ability to regulate prices and attributing Venezuela's division to communist ideology.
