About our UK Rail Strikes news
Latest news on UK rail strikes, after the UK faced its biggest rail strike in 30 years, with more strikes planned in a dispute over pay, working practices, and possible redundancies. With only skeleton services running for commuters into London and other cities, many people have been forced to stay at home.
The railway strikes are an ongoing industrial dispute between the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) and several rail companies over wages and planned changes to working practices, including redundancies.
Train drivers from the Aslef union at 16 operators in England striked on 30 September and 4 October, as well as imposing an overtime ban on 29 September and from 2 to 6 October 2023. They protested against the lack of pay rise since 2019 and the proposed changes to their working conditions.
Tube workers from the RMT union were also set to strike on 4 and 6 October, causing severe disruption or cancellation of underground services in London, to oppose the job cuts and attacks on their conditions by the Transport for London. These strikes, however, were called off.
