Tugendhat was born in 1975 and was educated at the University of Birmingham, where he studied History and Politics. He later attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

Tugendhat served in the British Army for ten years, seeing active service in Iraq and Afghanistan. He left the Army in 2006, and later worked as a management consultant.
