About our Ben Wallace news

Latest news on Ben Wallace is a British politician and former British Army officer who served as Secretary of State for Defence from July 2019 to August 2023. He is a member of the Conservative Party and has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wyre and Preston North, formerly Lancaster and Wyre, since 2005. He announced his intention to quit the cabinet earlier this summer and leave Parliament at the next general election to pursue new opportunities.

Ben Wallace had hoped to be the next NATO secretary general, but his bid was unsuccessful as the current chief Jens Stoltenberg's mandate was extended until 2024. He confirmed his resignation as defence minister on Thursday, August 31, 2023, in a letter to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. He praised Sunak's leadership and offered his full support, while warning him not to see defence as a "discretionary spend" by the government. Sunak replied with a letter thanking Wallace for his service and commending his achievements as defence secretary. He said he understood Wallace's desire to step down and wished him well for the future.
