About our UK Covid-19 Inquiry news

Latest news on the UK Covid-19 Inquiry, an independent public inquiry into the British government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom. The draft terms of the inquiry include the UK's preparedness for the pandemic, the use of lockdowns and other non-pharmaceutical interventions, pandemic management in hospitals and care homes, equipment procurement, and the financial support made available.

The inquiry was established under the Inquiries Act (2005), granting the chair the power to compel document production and call witnesses to give evidence on oath. The inquiry is chaired by Baroness Heather Hallett, a former Court of Appeal judge. She is responsible for making procedural decisions, hearing evidence, and making findings and recommendations.

The inquiry will cover the handling of the pandemic in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, including reserved and devolved matters. A separate inquiry is taking place in Scotland, and the UK inquiry will collaborate to avoid duplication of evidence and findings.
