    About our Oxford United News

Latest news on Oxford United (OUFC), the U's, with transfer rumours, fixtures, results, League One news and updates on the new Kidlington stadium.

Oxford United Football Club can trace their origins back to 1893, when they were founded as Headington, later becoming Headington United before adopting their current name in 1960. Nicknamed the U's, the club joined the Football League in 1962 and enjoyed their finest hour in 1986, winning the League Cup in their first season in the top flight under manager Maurice Evans. After two seasons in the Championship, Oxford United now compete in EFL League One, the third tier of English football, playing home matches at the Kassam Stadium under an Indonesian-backed ownership group.

The club have entered a period of transition under new head coach Aaron Ramsey, the former Arsenal and Wales midfielder who took his first permanent managerial role at Oxford United after retiring from playing. Off the pitch, the U's have secured planning permission for a new 16,000-seat stadium on the Triangle site near Kidlington, designed to replace the ageing Kassam Stadium once the current lease expires. Plans for the new ground, billed as one of English football's first all-electric stadiums, include a hotel, conference centre and community facilities alongside the pitch. Balancing this ambitious off-field project with on-field rebuilding after relegation remains a central challenge for the club's board and supporters alike.

Beyond results, Oxford United carry real significance for communities such as Blackbird Leys and Cowley, offering a different side of a city best known internationally for its university. Supporters, often nicknamed the Yellows after the club's traditional kit colours, sustain one of the more loyal followings in English football relative to attendances. Matches against near neighbours Swindon Town, contested as the A420 derby, and fixtures with Reading carry added local rivalry. The club also fields a women's team and runs community programmes across Oxfordshire, extending United's reach well beyond the Kassam Stadium.

The club's history includes a turbulent period under media owner Robert Maxwell, whose 1983 proposal to merge Oxford United with Reading into a single club provoked fierce protest from supporters of both sides before it was abandoned. Maxwell's backing later helped fund the cup success of the mid 1980s, yet within two years of the League Cup win the club had been relegated from the top flight, beginning an eighteen-year decline. That decline culminated in relegation out of the Football League altogether in 2006, making Oxford United the first winners of a major trophy to drop into non-league football. The club fought their way back over the following two decades, eventually returning to the Championship through the play-offs in 2024 after a 25-year absence from the second tier.
