About our D-Day news

Latest news on D-Day 80th anniversary, providing comprehensive coverage of commemorative events in Portsmouth, Normandy, and the British Normandy Memorial honouring the heroes of Operation Overlord.

The 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings, also known as D-Day, will be commemorated on 5-6 June 2024, marking eight decades since the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France during World War II. This pivotal event involved over 150,000 troops from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and other Allied nations.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will lead the tributes, with major events planned in Portsmouth and Normandy. Thousands of members of the public will join D-Day veterans, Armed Forces personnel, and special guests to honour the Greatest Generation. In Portsmouth, a ticketed event on Southsea Common will feature powerful testimonies, musical performances, and a spectacular send-off for veterans travelling to Normandy.

The commemorations will also focus on educating younger generations about the significance of D-Day. Hundreds of Portsmouth schoolchildren will attend the Southsea Common event, ensuring the legacy of the Normandy Landings lives on. Veterans' stories and personal accounts will be shared, highlighting the human dimension of this historic event.

On 6 June, the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer will host the UK's national commemorative event. This memorial, inaugurated in 2019 and officially opened in 2021, is the only one in Normandy listing the names of the 22,442 individuals who died under British command during the Normandy Campaign. The event will conclude with a traditional act of remembrance, including the Last Post and a two-minute silence.

As the 80th anniversary approaches, it is crucial to stay informed about the events honouring the courage and sacrifice of those who participated in D-Day. The NewsNow feed provides comprehensive, up-to-date coverage from reliable sources, ensuring that the legacy of this pivotal moment in history is never forgotten.
