He began his career in the Royal National Theatre with The Pillowman in 2003 and has written many plays produced on the West End and Broadway, including The Beauty Queen of Leenane and The Cripple of Inishmaan. He also directed dark comedy films such as In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Banshees of Inisherin (2022).
