About our ASLEF news

Latest news on ASLEF (Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen), the Association of Train Drivers in the United Kingdom. It is a trade union that represents train drivers working for train operating companies in England, Scotland and Wales. ASLEF is a member of the TUC and the European Transport Workers Federation.

ASLEF was founded in 1880 as the Amalgamated Society of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen. In 1922, it merged with the National Union of Railwaymen to form the National Union of Railwaymen and Firemen. In 1946, it changed its name to the Amalgamated Society of Railwaymen and Firemen. In 1968, it changed its name again to the Amalgamated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen. In 1986, it changed its name to the present one.

ASLEF represents train drivers at all levels, from newly qualified drivers to senior managers. It negotiates on pay and conditions, and provides training and support for its members.

ASLEF is a democratic organisation, controlled by its members. It is run by an Executive Committee, elected by the membership. The Executive Committee is responsible for the day-to-day running of the union.

ASLEF is affiliated to the Labour Party.
