That’s why we’re expanding and now looking for permanent, back-end software engineers, who will work on a wide array of hard computer science and engineering challenges.
About the role
You will join our highly-experienced and multi-disciplinary engineering team, playing a leading role on some of our biggest challenges for 2019 and beyond:
- A variety of technical challenges associated with launching NewsNow’s first-ever US edition and other foreign language editions
- Curating news content in real time for NewsNow’s all-new general news service, using signals derived from news volumes, traffic flows, user engagement and ratings
- Implement new ways of navigating between topics on our website based on new relationships between them
- Improving our image extraction and reprocessing logic
- Deploying suitable open source technology to provide an all-new news search capability
As a Senior Software Developer, your projects will largely be server-side. You will bring a sophisticated approach to problem solving, analysing trade-offs of different ways to achieve objectives, taking into account resources, technical limitations as well as scalability and security concerns.
You will also be expected to review others’ code, contribute across the entire stack (according to your particular skills), and play a role in administering our systems and keeping NewsNow running 24/7.
At NewsNow, product development is a team sport. So you'll also be invited to collaborate with other members of our product development and engineering team in conceiving development efforts, researching and specifying planned product enhancements, according to your particular skills.
You and your skills
For this role you will need:
- Advanced OOP skills in any modern high-level language
- University-level mathematics covering linear algebra, statistics, and probability theory
- Python 3
- An understanding of the principles behind great software design, allowing you to write complex code that’s clean, fast and scalable
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A track record of remote working or working with remote team members.
- Familiarity with the Linux command line, bash, and Git
- A BSc (Hons) or Masters degree or PhD in mathematics, computer science, or physics, as well as relevant commercial experience
In addition, some of the following will be an advantage:
- TensorFlow, Keras
- Database design, query optimisation skills
- Perl, NodeJS
- Debian, Ubuntu
- HTTP, Apache2
- Cloud services such as Amazon AWS or Google Cloud
You’re also someone who:
