Sweden is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy. Power rests with the 349-seat Riksdag and a Prime Minister, usually heading a coalition or minority government. The main parties include the Social Democrats, the Moderates and the Sweden Democrats. It is a unitary state split into 21 counties and 290 municipalities.
Coverage often covers gang violence and policing, immigration and integration, the welfare model, energy and nuclear power, and the Riksbank and inflation. Sweden ended its long non-alignment by joining NATO, and it also follows security in the Baltic Sea, Ukraine and the EU, which it joined in 1995 while keeping the krona. Home-grown companies such as Volvo, Ericsson, Spotify and IKEA make business news.
Swedish life is linked with the Nobel Prize, Swedish design, music, Nordic noir, fika, midsummer and the right of public access to nature. Education, health care and gender equality are strongly valued. Sweden has long been known for neutrality and its universal welfare system.
